I know someone who practices trumpet at 5am while his flatmate is asleep. He uses a mute. You could suggest to your neighbour that this might be a good survival strategy.
And Lucy -- my little brother played the drums. I always thought that was the worst possible choice (for those around him), but now I've heard a lot of trumpet, I'm starting to wonder...
My sympathies. My little brother learnt trumpet in primary school; luckily he got sick of it fairly quickly.

You could always take up the oboe or French horn in retaliation. . . Both those are wretched instruments in the hands of beginners. :)
