Grace -- I don't remember seeing ibises in Chch. Where do they hang out? I guess NZ ibises must be better behaved.
Badaunt -- they don't seem to talk to me like they do to you. I think they were just muttering, "Dinner, dinner, dinner." How do you get them to open up?
Magpie -- I agree: swans and peacocks are the worst. But ibises have REALLY big beaks.
Jesse -- no droppings that I've seen yet. Which is kind of weird, now I come to think of it. Maybe the ones in the picture were just coming to ask me if I had any laxatives.
In the Estuary or Travis Wetland. In fact I'm not sure if I've seen more than one, unlike the (similar-looking) royal spoonbills which form a mob in McCormacks Bay. They're all timid though, you can't get close to them.
But when I got close, they advanced on me in a very determined manner.
They were probably hoping you had some bread!

ReplyDeleteBirds can be really scary sometimes, I've been chased by both Swans and Peacocks in my time...not experiences I really want to repeat.

ReplyDeleteI think they'd have trouble getting their big curvy beaks around you. They were probably just hoping for some crumbs.
