In related news, we had the following email from our administrators recently:
Dear casual employees,
Due to our recent funding shortages, we are no longer able to pay overtime. You may continue to work after hours and on public holidays if necessary, but please fill in your time sheets as though you haven't.
Regards,
Admin.
No - no no no no no. Really? This is real? I don't disbelieve you - I just can't believe such a thing was communicated.
ReplyDeleteThat's horrible.
Er, is that legal?
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean you can still get paid for the hours, just not at overtime rates? I mean, are these self-scheduled jobs where you choose to break off early on Friday and work on Saturday, or jobs where someone requires you to get things done after hours?
ReplyDeleteWell, that's the question. In my case, it's self scheduled. So I've always filled in my time sheets as though I was working normal weekday hours, even if I actually worked in the evening or weekend, since I figured that was my choice.
ReplyDeleteBut I know casual staff who DON'T have a choice. I really hope this doesn't apply to them!
I see. Yes, for people with no choice, surely illegal and unbelievable. It's also highly unlikely that anyone who did have a choice was claiming for overtime and the dept let it go until now.
ReplyDeleteThat's so painful. I'm sorry.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not legal. I suspect even having sent that email can get them in trouble.
