Shortcuts: I'm doing them wrong

You have to love Google Maps, since they allow you to share your* stupidity with the whole internet.

Exhibit one: the sensible route that anyone else would have taken

Exhibit two: my 'shortcut'

_______________

* By 'your', of course, I mean 'my'.

Go on then...how much longer is your route?

There is a cartoon here called "Family Circus" --sometimes they do the "the quick way" vs. "the kid's way" kind of thing... and they illustrate all the stops, detours etc...

I do that too.....but that's a college campus, right? That's just how they are. You always think you can cut through, and you wind up trying to jaywalk a 4-lane highway.

My grad school had a football stadium between my house and the library. 5 years, and *every day* I thought, again, "hmm, what's the best way to get to the other side?"

I've done that a little too often. In fact, I once used Mapquest to show the walking tour I'd given some friends.

Mooninthegutter - the original distance would have been 2.1km; my "shortcut" was 3.2km.

Dance - it wasn't the university. In my defense, it was a part of town I hadn't walked in before. But I had seen on a map that the original route looked like three sides of a square, so I was pretty sure there was a better way :)

I would have gotten in a U-turn, too, probably after starting by heading to the left on your map.

Oops, I had forgotten about the 'u-turn' :) I started off by going left too!

(Can you call it a u-turn when you are walking? Logically, you'd think so, but I only associate u-turns with cars.)
