dude, what? papua new guinea? I had a friend who wen there as a summer missionary and she ate roots and grubs and what not.
I tagged you for a meme: 5 books you loved in 2007.
One of my colleagues did her research there, for two years, in a little village in a valley somewhere. Apparently it rained a lot, and you get to pick up some strange diseases.
When I asked her if she'd ever go back there, she said,
"NO."
And she's a very sensible person, so I'd suggest you found something interesting to do in, say ... Fiji?
Badaunt, your comment matches my prejudices quite closely.
I had a friend who managed to get a PhD topic that required fieldwork in Tahiti and New Caledonia. The university almost didn't fund her, on the premise that it's not real fieldwork if it doesn't involve suffering.
Talk to me! (You know you want to!)
