Overheard

1st professor (who has been here 10 years): "I'm taking three full weeks off for my summer holiday. I decided that this year I don't give a fuck. I'm going to take the full amount of leave I'm entitled to!"

2nd professor (who has been here 20 years): "How much leave are we entitled to, actually? I've never taken any."

1st professor: "I have no idea. But dammit, I'm going to take it anyway!"

Weekend_Viking, I deleted your comment because I'd rather not have this blog googlable via the name of my university. Sorry!

Are they American?
I met a friend this morning who is being forced to take 9 weeks leave in place of accrued overtime. I wish academia worked like that. If I actually worked enough to accrue overtime, I suppose...

One was British and one American. But I think most people at our university don't take official holidays. They sometimes don't come into the office, but they count it as "working from home". And sometimes they take a couple of days extra after a conference and do some sightseeing, but I think most of them don't bother to try and sort out the official paperwork to count it as annual leave.
